At String Project|LA (SPLA) we believe each student is an artist. That’s why we’ve created the Alternative String Group (ASG), the most innovative and inspiring experience for young artists offered anywhere in the country. Far more than just a performing ensemble, the ASG offers young string players the opportunity to improvise, to play music they enjoy, to work as a team, and to express themselves through their instruments.

Our Alternative String Groups began meeting in 2007. Since then, we’ve been having a great time working on every style of music from Freddie Hubbard and U2 to Dr. Dre and Rage Against the Machine. ASG students have enjoyed regular live performances at some of LA's coolest venues. While we work towards live concerts throughout the year, students can create their own small groups at any time to fit their age, interests, and experience level. (No experience playing in alternative styles or improvising is required.) Check our calendar for current spaces in our Summer Day Camps & Classes at our headquarters in Culver City.
